LAWTON, Okla. - After losing a lead in a Lone Star Conference in the final two innings for a third straight game in a 7-2 loss in the first game of a doubleheader, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second game en route to a 7-4 win over Cameron.
In the win, Jeremy Flores tossed a perfect 1-2-3 seventh for his seventh save of the season. The save was the 17th of his career breaking Juan Obregon's all-time save mark.
The Javelinas will look to even the series at two on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kingsville enters at 24-12 overall and 7-8 in the LSC. Cameron drops to 10-21 overall and 4-11 in the LSC.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Kingsville opened the contest with three straight singles off Cameron starter Drew Reidt (1-3). Joe Tallerine led off the game with a single and scored on a Taylor Taska hit to right-center two batters later. With two outs, Cash Barker drove in Ben Villafuerte and Taska with a single through the right side of the infield.
The Hoggies added to their lead with two more runs in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by Ryan Guedry and Barker started the inning. With one out, Trent Wagner singled up the middle to plate both runs for a 5-0 advantage.
The Aggies answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Javelina starter Zach Pettiford walked his first two batters of the game. Kenny Acosta and Thomas Galvin followed with back-to-back RBI singles. The third run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Lum, while Galvin crossed the plate to make it a 1-run game, 5-4, with a single to right.
Kingsville sealed the win with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Taska walked to start the inning, went to second a sacrifice bunt by Chris Ballou, and scored on a single by Guedry. Julian Duran came in to run for Ballou and stole second. He crossed the plate on a single by Barker, who drove in three runs in the contest.
Pettiford lasted 3-2/3 innings before being relieved by Cody Williams. Pettiford allowed four earned runs on six hits, three strikeouts and three walks. Cody Williams relieved Pettiford in the fourth and went 2-1/3 innings without allowing a run. He scattered two hits and fanned four to earn the win move to 2-1.
Kingsville finished with 11 hits led by Barker with three, while Guedry and Taska each had two.
In the opening game, the Javelinas took the lead with an unearned run in the third. With one away, Tallerine singles and went to second a hit by Villafuerte. With two away, Tallerine scored as Ballou reached on an infield error.
Tallerine scored the game's second run in the fifth. He led off with a single and went advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With two away, Ballou doubled down the left field line to plate Tallerine for the 2-0 lead.
Taska appeared to be cruising allowing one run on three hits through five innings. The lone run came on a solo homer by Acosta ending the Javelina pitcher's scoreless inning streak at 27.
In the sixth, the Aggies woke up offensively with five hits off Taska and took advantage of an error by Matt Perez which would have give the Javelinas two away with no one on base.
Taska dropped to 5-1 as he allowed seven runs with four earned. He allowed eight hits and struck out three.
Cameron followed the error with four straight singles. After a single by Smith, Kevin Waukau doubled to plate a pair of runs. Back-to-back RBI singles by Brad Blumer and Tyler Cox followed. With two away, Galvin single to drive in Cox and scored as Keaton Green singled for the 7-2 advantage.
Aaron Kleekamp (3-4) earned the win for Cameron tossing a complete game. He scattered seven hits, fanned six and allowed one earned run.
