KINGSVILLE, Texas - For the first time under head coach Jason Gonzales, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team finds itself ranked in the top 10 in the nation in a weekly baseball poll. The Javelinas are tenth in the College Baseball Lineup DII Top 30 and in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper DII.
The Javelinas enter Tuesday's game with Texas A&M-International with an 18-5 record. International was in several rankings last week but dropped out after being swept by St. Edward's.
Kingsville hosts Abilene Christian, which also went 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play last weekend, this Friday at 6 p.m.. The two teams will meet on Saturday and Sunday at Nolan Ryan Field at 1 p.m. each day. Saturday's action will consist of two, 7-inning games.
Last week, they went 3-2 winning their Lone Star Conference series with Angelo State in San Angelo, 3-1. Kingsville fell to St. Mary's in a rematch at home last Tuesday after downing the Rattlers in February at Joe Wolff Stadium.
The Javelinas have also seen their National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association regional ranking climb to No. 2 in the South Central Region. Kingsville is second with 82 points - just one behind St. Mary's. In the NCBWA national poll, the team just missed a third top 10 ranking taking the 11th spot.
In other national polls, Kingsville was voted 15th in the DIIBaseballnews.com rankings, while the NCBWA national poll has not been released this week. The Hoggies were 17th a week ago.
Kingsville has a 6-2 mark of nationally ranked teams this season. The Javelinas have downed Central Missouri, which is ranked as high as third with two losses on the season, St. Cloud State, which is seventh in one poll at 9-2, St. Mary's, which dropped to 11th this week, and Angelo State, which dropped to 25th in one poll.
