KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball suffered a 13-8 loss to West Texas A&M Sunday on Senior Day at Nolan Ryan Field as the two sides split their Lone Star Conference series.
The Javelinas dropped to 27-14 and 10-10 in the conference, while West Texas A&M has an identical league mark at 10-10 with a 24-16 overall mark.
Kingsville took an early 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as Ryan Guedry had an RBI single. Guedry raced to third an errant pick-off attempt and scored on an RBI by James Black.
The visitors answered with four unearned runs in the top of the third taking advantage of a pair of Javelina errors. Beto Rodriguez's 2-run single capped the inning.
The score stayed 5-2 until the Buffs added four more in sixth on two hits to lead 9-2. Javelina pitchers struggled finding the umpire's strike zone in the inning walking four hitters.
After Matt Perez doubled to drive in Cash Barker, West Texas scored four runs in the seventh with two away that sealed the win. Chad Miles and Tyler McKnight began the rally with two straight singles. David Hebert followed with shot down the right field line and over the first base bag for a 2-run double despite the objection of Javelina head coach Jason Gonzales, who was ejected on the play. The Buffs added two more runs after the play.
The ejection of their coach seemed to fire up the Javelinas in the bottom of the seventh as they rallied for five runs with two outs.
Ben Villafuerte started the rally when he was walked and scored on a single by Chris Ballou. After Taylor Taska walked, Barker and Perez loaded the bases as Carlos Maese hit them with pitches. Taska scored as Perez was hit. A pair of wild pitchers led to Ballou scoring. Guedry singled to left field for the final two runs.
Ballou, Perez and Guedry each had two hits for the Javelinas.
Matt Rhodes dropped to 4-2 as he allowed five unearned runs on five hits in three innings. WT's Ryan Houston claimed the win to move to 4-2.
The Javelinas close out their home slate Tuesday at 6 p.m. at St. Edward's.
