KINGSVILLE, Texas - Four Javelinas scored in double figures as the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team held off a late charge by Angelo State for a 70-61 win on Senior Night at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The win was the tenth at home this season as Kingsville went 10-4 at the SPEC and moved to 12-12 on the season and 8-9 in the Lone Star Conference. The Javelinas close out the regular season on Saturday at Abilene Christian in the Wildcats final regular-season contest as members of the LSC.
Kingsville dominated in the paint and thrived off turnovers in building a 19-point lead with 12:18 remaining as Adonis Bailey, who had a team-high 14 points, converted a Dytrel Bracey steal into a fast-break bucket. The layin made it a 53-34 contest as the Javelinas opened the final period with a 20-9 run.
Angelo (6-19, 3-14), which downed Kingsville 81-67 at home in January, cut its deficit to under 10 with 7:23 left with a 15-5 run. Antonio Dye, who was 4-of-4 from the 3-point line, had two treys in the run.
After Daymon Warren's dunk after a Bracey steal briefly pushed the led to 11, the visitors scored five straight point. Chris Talkington's three with just over five minutes to go made it 60-54.
Kingsville led by nine after a coast-to-coast drive by Bailey with 69 seconds left, however the Hoggies couldn't shake the visitors. A steal by Jovan Austin led to a 3-point basket by Dye to make it a 65-61 contest.
Bailey gave the Javelinas breathing room by hitting 3-of-4 foul shots in a 10-second stretch. Dwight Taylor sealed the win steal and dunk with 20 seconds left that made it a 9-point game, 70-61.
Aside from Bailey's 14 points, Reid Wallace and Warren each had 13 points, while Rashad Basey had 10. Kingsville hit 50% of its shots from the field, while limiting the visitors to 37% shooting on the night. The Hoggies forced 18 turnovers and had 13 steals on the night.
The Javelinas held a 23-5 scoring advantage off turnovers and had 16 fastbreak points to zero for the visitors. Kingsville also won the battle in the paint with 40 points to 22 for the Rams.
Ryan Marsh and Dye led the Rams with 14 points, while Austin had 10 points and six assists. The visitors hit 7-of-20 from behind the arc. They were 14-of-16 from the foul line while TAMUK was just 11-of-20.
