Javelinas Ground Out Win Over McMurry In Home Opener, Rush 529 Yards

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M-Kingsville football team gave the home fans several reasons to be excited on Saturday in the home opener scoring 28 first quarter points and 35 in the first half en route to a 52-32 win over McMurry on IBC Bank Hispanic Heritage Weekend.

The Javelinas (2-0) amassed 577 yards of total offense in the game with 529 coming on the ground on 61 carries. Greg Pitre led the way with 10 carries for 180 yards and two scores, while Aaron Bueno had 13 for 88. Cornelius Shackelford had 10 for 78 and Marquis Cardinal had 74 yards on three carries.

Much like last week's game against Monterrey Tech, the Javelinas jumped out to an early lead scoring 28 points in the first quarter. It was the first time since Sept. 12, 2009 against Central Oklahoma that Kingsville scored 28 points in a quarter.

In his first game at running back for the Javelinas after missing the first two games with injury, Shackelford made up for lost time scoring a pair of touchdowns in the first 11 minutes. After a 37-yard run, he capped a 5-play, 59-yard drive with an 8-yard TD run. Moments later Shackelford, who played linebacker last season, took advantage of a 73-yard run by Cardinal, who was pulled down at the one, with a 1-yard TD run with 3:56 left in the quarter.

The defense got into the act with the next score. Defensive lineman Victor Castro snared a pass at the McMurry 20 and raced untouched to the end zone. Matt Stoll's third successful point-after attempt was good for a 21-0 lead.

Robert Armstrong capped the first quarter scoring with a 4-yard run on an end around. The extra-point was good making it 28-0.

Pitre joined the rushing party in the second quarter. He sliced and diced his way for an 89-yard touchdown as Kingsville extended its lead to 35-0. It was the eighth-longest TD run in Javelina history.

The 35 points in a half were the most since scoring 37 against Angelo State in the season finale in 2010.

McMurry finally got on the board with a 6-yard pass from Gabe Rodriguez to Greg Livingston with 2:39 left in the first half. The P.A.T was good making it 35-7 at the break.

After Chris Simpson pulled the War Hawks to within 35-13 with a 1-yard run, Pitre broke loose for his second TD of the game racing 46 yards to push the lead to 42-13 with 4:23 left in the first quarter.

Rodriguez threw for two more scores as McMurry pulled to within 42-25 but could get no closer.

Kingsville closed out the game with the final 10 points. Stoll converted a 32-yard field goal and Aaron Bueno dove in from four yards out to make it 52-25.

Rodriguez added a fourth TD with an 18-yard pass to Corey Lopez with 17 seconds left. He finished 29-of-52 passing for 278 yards for four touchdowns.

Anthony Forker and Forrest Jones had eight tackles apiece for Kingsville. Zane Brown had six tackles, a sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss. Jonathan Blair led the visitors with 11.

Kingsville hosts West Texas A&M next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Javelina Stadium.
