KINGSVILLE, Texas - With a pair of dominating pitching performances and late home run by Taylor Taska, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team completed its series sweep of Incarnate Word on Saturday winning the opening game 12-1 in eight innings and the finale 2-1 in eight innings.
The Javelinas finish the regular season with a 35-15 overall record and an 18-10 mark in the Lone Star Conference. With eight straight conference wins the Javelinas clinched the second seed in the upcoming LSC Championship next week at West Texas A&M in Canyon.
Incarnate Word finishes 26-24 overall and 12-16 in the LSC and are sixth in the LSC.
In the opening game, the Hoggies scored in six of eight innings. With four runs in the eighth, Kingsville built a 12-0 lead and didn't allow a run until the bottom of the eighth.
Kingsville finished the opener with 14 hits led by Ben VIllafuerte with four hits and four runs scored. Taska had a 2-run triple in the eighth and lead the team with three RBI, while Chris Ballou, Cash Barker and James Black, who launched his fourth home run of the season, each had a two runs batted in.
The opening game starter, Taska moved to 7-2 with the complete-game performance. He went eight innings scattering five hits and walking one he struck out four. Taska tossed just 91 pitches.
In game two, Matt Rhodes had the complete game win to move to 6-3 on the season. He allowed one run on three hits. He threw just 80 pitches and the Javelina offense had to rally in the top of the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Trailing 1-0 entering the final inning of the 7-inning affair, Trent Wagner tripled to right-center field. He raced home on a sacrifice fly by David Massey.
Taska then won the game in the top of the eighth with a solo home run to left field for his team-leading seventh of the season.
Neither team managed to get a run across the plate until the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Blake Woosley walked to start the inning and scored from second on a double down the line in left by Jason Stone.
