FLORENCE, Ala. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team allowed three touchdowns in the first nine minutes to North Alabama Saturday night at Braly Stadium and couldn't recover falling 49-17 in a GSC-LSC First-and-Ten Challenge Game.
Kingsville drops to 2-4 on the season, while the Lions move to 4-2.
Traditionally a power-running offense, North Alabama went to the air early to take the early lead and finished with 245 yards through the air.
On the opening possession, the Lions' Luke Wingo hit Korey Jones on a 42-yard pass on the first play. Wingo later scored on a 1-yard run 99 seconds into the game.
UNA then scored twice in a span of 100 seconds midway through the opening quarter to take control.
Wingo, who connected with Jones on a 35-yard pass to start the second drive, capped an 8-play drive with a 7-yard pass to Diamond Simmons. The score came at 7:56 mark. After a Philbert Martial 53-yard punt return to the Kingsville four, Jacob Tucker ran the ball in from the four
Down 21-0, the Javelinas broke through for 10 second quarter points to pull within 21-10.
Matt Stoll's 44-yard field goal put the Javelinas on the board on the first play of the second quarter. The kick capped a 13-play, 68-drive by Kingsville. After a pair of 5-yard runs by Caleb Bedford and Chazz Adams gave the Hoggies a first down at the UNA 22, the drive stalled with three straight sacks by the Lions.
The Javelina defense came up with a turnover late in the half as defensive end Robert Williams ripped the ball away from the Lions' Simmons and recovered it in UNA's territory at the 34. Four runs by Cornelius Shackelford helped the Javelinas move to the one. Bedford then scored his third touchdown in three games with 44 seconds left in the half.
Just as Kingsville seemed to be pulling itself back into the game with the score and the ball to start the second half, North Alabama seized the momentum back with a quick score with 9.6 seconds left in the half. After a solid kick return and a penalty on the Javelinas put the ball at midfield for the Lions, Wingo connected on a 20-yard TD pass to Lee Mayhall to make it 28-10.
Three second half scores pushed the Javelina deficit to 49-10.
After Wingo threw his third TD pass of the game, Caleb Massey picked off a Bedford pass and returned it 25-yards for a score less than a minute later.
Jamarcus Goodloe carried the ball in from the one for the Lions' final points.
Robert Armstrong grabbed a 23-yard pass from Bedford with 12 seconds left it was his 28th TD catch as a member of the Javelinas. He finished with 98 yards on seven catches. Armstrong now has 199 career receptions.
Kingsville finished with an advantage in first downs 22 to 18 and the time of possession by eight minutes but could not overcome the early scores and three intercepted passes.
TAMUK had 313 yards of total offense, while UNA had 366.
Individually, Shackelford led all players with a career-best 92 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Adams had eight totes for 37. Bedford was 17-of-38 with three picks for 191 yards.
Wingo finished 13-of-17 passing for 194 yards. Jones had three catches for 99 yards. The Lions defense combined for eight sacks.
The Javelinas head to Eastern New Mexico next Saturday. The game at Blackwater Draw is slated to start at 4 p.m. central.
