KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader Saturday to Abilene Christian dropping 3-2 in the first game and 4-0 in the second game.
The Javelinas, who entered the weekend ranked 10th in the nation, move to 19-8 overall and are 3-4 in the Lone Star Conference. Abilene Christian improves to 18-10 and 6-1 in the LSC.
In the opening game, all of the scoring was done in the first three innings.
The visiting Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as they began the game with three singles in a row. The third hit by Taylor Schuetze drove in the first run, while the second run scored on a 2-out single by Kyle Giusti.
The Javelinas clawed out a run in the bottom of the first. After Dustin Aguilar was picked off first base following a lead-off single, Ben Villafuerte tripled to left-center field and scored on a wild pitch.
ACU made it 3-1 in the top of the second as Chuck Duarte led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a grounder, he scored on a single by Tyler Eager.
Villafuerte's second home run of the season pulled Kingsville back to within 3-2 in the bottom of the third. Kingsville's Taylor Taska followed with a single, but it was the last hit of the game for the Hoggies.
Zachary Pettiford suffered the loss for the Javelinas dropping to 3-2 on the year despite giving up just three earned runs. Pettiford, who settled down and allowed four hits in the final five innings, struckout six hitters and walked two in 6-1/3 innings.
Carter Hahn allowed two runs on four hits in six innings of work to move to 4-2. Brady Rodriguez tossed a scoreless seventh for his fifth save.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Javelina offense could not figure out Aaron Lambrix. The ACU starter threw a 1-hit shutout striking out five and walking just one in the 7-inning game.
Rodge Macy provided all the offense the visitors needed with a 2-run single in the first inning. ACU added a single-run in each of the third and fifth innings.
Villafuerte had the lone hit for Kingsville with a double in the fourth but was stranded with Matt Perez, who walked. He extended his streak to 26 games reached safely this season.
Cody Williams was charged with the loss as he gave up four runs on eight hits in 4-2/3 innings. He walked three and fanned two. Denver Diefenbach and Tres Tyler pitched the 2-1/3 innings combining to no-hit ACU.
The two teams will meet in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
