KINGSVILLE, Texas - Playing their first game since Feb. 23, the Texas A&M-Kingsville outscored Fisher College 28-5 in a doubleheader Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field. The run the first game 15-0 and the second game 13-4.
Kingsville (13-3) showed list rust in the opening game. The Javelinas scored 15 runs on 10 hits, while Dallas Ponder moved to 5-0 on the season with a complete-game shutout.
The hosts sent 21 batters to the plate in their first two innings taking a 10-0 lead.
In the first, the Hoggies scored four times on four hits. Ben Villafuerte doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored as Tyler Taska reached on a wild pitch on strike three. After a single by Clint Wallace, Cash Barker drove in the second run with a single. After Matt Perez drew a bases loaded walk, James Black hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 4-0 lead.
Twelve batters took their turn at the plate in the second for Kingsville as it plated six runs on three hits. Chris Ballou, who had three RBI in the game drove in two of the runs with a blast to left field. It was his second home run of the season. The final three runs of the frame came on bases loaded walks.
After Black singled in a run in the third for an 11-0 lead, the Hoggies scored four times in the sixth. Trent Wagner doubled to plate James Wallace and scored on a wild pitch. Mario Siller closed out the scoring with a 2-run home run down the line in left. The homer was the first of Siller's career.
Meanwhile, Ponder held the Falcons at bay. He fanned 12 hitters, while walking just one. Just one batter advanced safely past first in the game. The 12 Ks were a career-high for the junior whose previous high was 10 in a game versus Cameron last year.
The offense kept going in the second game as the Javelinas erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the third. Taska ignited the offense by belting a grand slam to center field. Perez, Ryan Guedry and Black each added RBIs in the inning, while Black crossed on an error for an 8-0 lead.
After Guedry's 2-run double made it 10-0 in the fourth, Kingsville added two runs in the fifth to make it 12-1. Julian Duran hit an inside-the park home run for the inning's first run. Wallace drove in Justin Lee for the final run of the inning.
Black drove in the game's final run with a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the sixth.
Cody Williams earned his first win as a Javelina tossing four scoreless innings. He fanned five Falcons and permitted just two hits.
The same two teams are slated to meet in a second doubleheader on Sunday. The first game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
