Javelinas Defeat International 3-1

LAREDO, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville stepped out of Lone Star Conference play on Tuesday and claimed a 3-1 victory over South Texas rival Texas A&M International at Jorge Haynes Field.

With the win, the Javelinas moved to 17-11 on the season, while International falls to 12-18. The teams will meet again in Kingsville on April 8 at 6 p.m. at Nolan Ryan Field.

Kingsville scored first with two outs in the top of the third. Derrick Walls tripled to center and scored on a double to left by Miles Holcomb.

The Dustdevils tied the game at one in the bottom of the fourth as Andrew Arteaga reached on an error and later scored on a double by Alex McKeon.

The Javelinas took the lead for good in the fifth inning as David Massey reached on a lead-off single. He would come around to score on a single by Walls.

Kingsville added an insurance run in the eighth. Dustin Aguilar came off the bench to begin the inning with a walk. After a Justin Lee sacrifice bunt, James Black scored on a double down the line in right field.

The Hoggies had a stellar performance from Ryan Benitez (1-1) on the bump to make the runs stand for his first career win. In just his second start, Benitez earned the win. He tossed 6-2/3 innings striking out eight and walking just one. Benitez allowed one unearned run on four hits.

Three Kingsville relievers followed without permitting a run. Carl Huizar and Tres Tyler each tossed 2/3 of an inning allowing one hit each. Ryan Scott picked up his fourth save in his fourth straight opportunity.

The Hoggies had nine hits in the game led by Walls with three. James Black added two hits.

Baylr Bicketron suffered the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season.

The Javelinas return to Nolan Ryan Field this weekend for the state of a 9-game homestand when Tarleton State visits. The 4-game series with the Texans begins with a 6 p.m. start on Friday.
