EDINGBURG, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team moved a step closer to opening the 2013-14 campaign as traveling to UTPA for an exhibition game with the Broncs falling 74-56 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Javelinas, who open the regular season on Nov. 12 at St. Mary's in San Antonio, received 22 points from senior Rashad Basey and 11 from newcomer Ronald Scott. Robert Powell came off the bench to lead all players with 11 rebounds.
Basey, who led the Javelinas in scoring a season ago, was 9-of-15 from the field. He was a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the 3-point line. Scott added six assists and six rebounds.
After struggling with their shot in the first half, the Javelinas hit 46.2% in the second half. They were 5-of-9 from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes.
Shaquille Hines led three Broncs in double-digit scoring. Hines had 18 points, while Javorn Farrell had 11 and Justin Leathers 10. Hines and Leathers each added eight rebounds to lead the hosts. The Broncs had a huge advantage at the foul line hitting 24-of-33, while Kingsville connected on 24-of-33.
