WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team out-rebounded their opponent and forced more turnovers, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 52.2% shooting performance by Midwestern State in a 61-42 loss on Saturday.
Ashley Viera came off the bench with 12 points and Sheana Jones added 11 for the Javelinas (4-15, 2-11) who shot 25% (14-of-56) as a team. Viera and Jones were a combined 8-of-15 for Kingsville. Lisa Hampton came off the bench to lead the Mustangs (16-3, 11-2) with 17 going 5-of-7 from the 3-point line. Andrea Carter added 11 points.
Led by Kaitlyn Lowen with nine rebounds, the Javelinas finished with 40 boards including 19 offensive. All nine Hoggies that played had at two rebounds and two points. Kingsville forced 24 turnovers swiping 15 steals. Brittany Selby swiped three to lead the way, while Brandi Clark, Madara Gulbe, Jones, and Lowen all had two thefts.
The Javelinas took an early 5-4 lead less than four minutes into the game before MSU went on a 12-2 run for a 16-7 advantage.
The game was still in single digits after a basket by Gulbe with 6:21 left in the first half. MSU responded with an 18-5 run to end the half leading 41-20.
The Mustangs pulled out to a 30-point lead, 59-29 with 6:37 remaining before Kingsville ended the game on a 12-2 run.
The Javelinas are off until next Saturday when they travel to Denton to take on Texas Woman's at 2 p.m.
