Javelina Women Fall to LSC Rival A&M Commerce, 63-58

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team went point-for-point with the conference opponent Texas A&M-Commerce but it wasn't enough Saturday as they fell, 63-58.
Kingsville (1-4, 3-8) came out strong in the first half, leading by 12 points, 19-7, at the 9:57 mark. From there Commerce (3-2, 5-5) went on a 13-0 run taking the lead for the first time, 20-19 with four minutes remaining. The Javelinas went scoreless for six minutes during the run, but came back to tie the game at 27.
The second half continued a back-and-forth battle between the two teams until Commerce took a six-point lead, 56-50, with 4:34 remaining. The Javelinas couldn't catch up after that, adding only two points the rest of the game.
The lead changed 16 times between the two teams and they were tied up nine times.
Three Javelinas had double figures. Senior Kaitlyn Lowen led the team with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists just missing her fourth double-double. Junior Sheana Jones followed closely behind with 12 points and four total rebounds. Breanna Gonzalez scored 10 points and had four steals, a career high for the senior.
The Lions scored 40 of their total points in the paint while Kingsville only scored 18 in the paint. Both teams shot 32 percent from the field. The Javelinas shot 80 percent from the free throw line while Commerce only shot 62 percent and had double the amount of attempts at the line.
Kingsville will be back on the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court Thursday morning for a rare 10 a.m. tip off against Eastern New Mexico.
