KINGSVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team stayed with Tarleton State in the first half of Saturday's Lone Star Conference home opener, but the TexAnns pulled away with 22-6 run to open the second half en route to an 80-61 win on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The loss drops the Javelinas to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the LSC. Meanwhile, TSU moves to 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.
Ashley Viera and Lindsey Mahone led Kingsville with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Sheana Jones had six steals as the Javelinas swiped 13.
Five TexAnns finished in double figures led by Kiara Wright with 17 points. Wright the reigning Player of the Year in the LSC had nine rebounds and was one of two TSU players to just miss a double-double. Kathy Ashmore had 16 points, while Brianna Bledsoe netted 11. Shanae Lowrance and Karli Moore each had 10 points.
Kingsville forced 21 turnovers in the game while committing just 16. However, the Hoggies hit just 32.3% from the floor while the visitors made over 51%. The TexAnns out-rebounded Kingsville 48-35.
The Javelinas remain at home to participate in Wednesday's "Live the Dream" promotion sponsored by HEB. Over 2,000 area elementary kids will attend the doubleheader between Kingsville and Eastern New Mexico. The women play at 10 a.m. and the men follow at noon.
