KINGSVILLE, Texas - The 2013 edition of the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team was selected to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference in the league's preseason poll announced on Tuesday. The poll is voted upon by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.
West Texas, which finished second in the regular season a year ago, edged out defending conference champion Angelo State for first in the LSC. The Lady Buffs finished with 12 first-place votes and had 211 points to 208 for the Rambelles. The other three top spot votes went to Texas Woman's which was third in the conference with 161 points just a head of Tarleton State. A&M-Commerce was chosen fifth with 113 points, while the Javelinas had 101. Midwestern State (81 points), Cameron (62), and Eastern New Mexico (33) rounded out the poll.
The top six teams in the league head to the Lone Star Conference Championship Nov. 21-23. The tourney will be held on the court of the regular-season champion.
The Javelinas are coming off a 17-14 campaign in which they finished sixth in the LSC during the regular season. They fell to Angelo State in the first round of the conference tournament in five sets. Kingsville boasts six returnees from a season ago including outside hitters Dedra Brown and Kelsey Washington. Setter Sarah Fountain is back to direct the offense.
The preseason player honors were also announced on Tuesday. Angelo State's Maddie Huth and Shelby Wilt were tabbed Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively. Jordan Neal of Texas A&M-Commerce was named Setter of the Year.
