KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team earned their second win of the Lone Star Conference as they split Friday night's doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico.
Kingsville (12-28, 2-14) fell in game one to the Zias 2-0 but came back for revenge in the second game defeating Eastern New Mexico (13-33, 5-12) 7-4.
During game one, the Javelinas led the Zias in hits 7-6, but in the end fell 2-0. Eastern scored a run in two innings off five of their hits.
Kingsville had chances to score in the last four innings, but left runners at third base each time.
Starting pitcher Katrisha Arocha (5-13) took the loss for the Javelinas, pitching 3.1 innings. Relief pitcher Denise Arnold pitched 3.2 innings, striking out five.
Eastern's Amy Smith earned the win after pitching five innings, allowing five walks and five hits. She improves to 4-16 on the year.
The Zias got it started early in the first inning, scoring two runs off three hits and an error. The Javelinas responded quickly in the bottom of the first with a double by Adela Gomez bringing in two runs.
Kingsville went ahead in the third inning with a RBI single to left field by Kodie Garner and a RBI sacrifice fly by Bailey Offill. Eastern New Mexico also had two fielding errors during the inning to assist with the two points scored.
The Javelinas scored two runs to seal the deal in the fourth inning. Rose Stubbs scored a run of a throwing error by the center fielder.
Eastern stayed scoreless through the seventh inning when Savannah Chavez hit a two-run homer down the right field line. Arocha struck out the final two batters to close out the game.
Arocha pitched a complete game and earned her sixth win of the season, striking out five in the second game. Katie Ramsay (3-17) earned the loss for the Zias, allowing five runs off five hits and gave up a walk.
The two teams return to Hubert Field for the final game of the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The game is sponsored by IBC Bank.
