AUSTIN, Texas - For the second day in a row, the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team went 1-1 at the St. Edward's Tournament. The Javelinas downed Texas A&M International 3-2 to open Sunday before closing with an 8-2 loss to the hosts.
The Javelinas, who split with the same two teams the day before, moved to 6-11 on the season. They return home to host Huston-Tillotson in a doubleheader next Saturday. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
In the win over the Dustdevils, Kingsville struck early scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.
Rose Stubbs singled to open the inning and scored on a double to left-center field by Carynn Gonzales. Lex Cordova and Adela Gomez loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch and walking, respectively. Kodie Garner hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Gonzales for a 2-0 advantage.
TAMIU pulled to within a run in the fourth inning. Rochelle Nash led off with a double and scored on a double by Mariena Gallardo.
The Javelinas took a 3-1 lead in the fifth for a 2-run cushion. Gonzales reached on a 1-out double. With two away, Gomez singled to dive in Gonzales.
The Dustdevils rallied for a run in the sixth and threatened for more.
With one away, Gallardo sinlged to right and moved to third on a hit by Cassandra Deleon off starter Katrisha Arocha.
Denise Arnold came in and walked a batter to load the bases. After a sacrifice fly by Chelsea Capello plated Gallardo, Arnold ended the threat with a strikeout.
Arnold pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for her first save of the season. Arocha moved to 3-5 with the win.
Stubbs and Gonzales led the way with two hits apiece for Kingsville.
In the second game, the Hilltoppers jumped out a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first including a 2-run double by Kendall Lucas off Arnold. The tournament host added a pair of runs in the fourth off of Arocha for a 6-0 advantage.
Kingsville finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. Stubbs reached on a 2-out single and scored on a double by Gonzales. The single extended the senior shortstop's hitting streak to 10 games. She is hitting .529 in the stretch.
After the Hilltoppers plated two more runs in the sixth, Stubbs belted her first home run of the season to make it 8-2. It was the second homer of her career.
Stubbs finished with three hits in the finale while Cordova recorded two.
Arnold suffered the loss falling to 3-5. She tossed three innings with four earned runs. Arocha pitched the final three frames in relief.
