LAWTON, Okla. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team led for much of regulation Wednesday night, but could not hold off a late charge by Cameron to force overtime. The Aggies would go on to win 82-79 in double overtime.
The loss was the third straight for the Javelinas who move to 9-9 on the year. They fall to 5-6 in the Lone Star Conference heading into Saturday's crucial meeting with Midwestern State. The Aggies move to 7-4 in the league and are now 11-6 on the year.
In the first overtime, Reid Wallace drained three straight free throws to knot the game at 75 for Kingsville with 38 seconds left. Cameron's Andrew Thomas tried a late three to win but it was off target.
In the second OT, Rashad Basey opened the scoring with a jumper. Thomas tied the game with 2:28 left with a jumper of his own. After an Aggie free throw, Dytrel Bracey gave the Javelinas a 1-point lead, 79-78, with just over 60 seconds left.
Assad Robinson swiped a steal with 25 seconds left and was fouled. His two free throws gave the Aggies an 80-79 advantage with 23 seconds to go.
After an offensive foul, Jonathan Patino sealed the win with 12 seconds left for an 82-79 advantage by downing a pair of foul shots.
Bracey, who hit the game-winning trey in overtime against West Texas A&M, tried to tie the game. His 3-point attempt was no good with five seconds left.
The Javelinas led by as much as 11 in the first half led by Basey, who had 14 of his game-best 27 in the opening half. Meanwhile, the Javelina defense held Craig Foster to zero points in the first 20 minutes.
The Aggie leading scorer would score 16 in the second half to spur the Aggie comeback. He finished with 19.
With the Javelinas up 37-29 at the half, the Aggies opened with a 13-5 run tying the game at 42, 5:33 into the second half.
A 3-point bucket by Reid Wallace and a basket by Bracey pushed the Javelinas back up by six with 10 remaining.
After a Foster trey made it 52-49 Hoggies, back-to-back jumpers by Adam Mughmaw and Basey made it a 7-point game with 6:56 left at 56-49.
Kingsville remained up by six as Wallace drained a three, 52-46, with five minutes left. The Javelinas, however, would score just four more points the rest of the way. The last was basket by Basey with 3:08 left for a 66-62 lead.
Cameron tied the game at 66 on shot by Andrew Thomas with a minute left.
The Javelinas had one chance in regulation but Adonis Bailey's shot was blocked by Thomas.
Aside from Basey's 27, Dwight Taylor and Wallace each had 10. For CU, Foster's 19 led the way while Thomas added 18. Kimric Dixon scored 12 and Rudy Harrell 10.
