Javelina Men Claim Home Win Over Lions, 75-69

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Three Javelinas scored in double digits and the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team limited Texas A&M-Commerce to two field goals in the game's final six minutes en route to a 75-69 Lone Star Conference win Saturday afternoon at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Javelinas (6-5, 2-2) trailed by three, 61-58, after the Lions' Preston Whitley hit a pair of free throws, however Kingsville newcomer Adonis Bailey answered with a thunderous dunk in the face of Andrew Davis. Bailey, who had 10 points, converted a free throw to tie the game at 61 with 6:29 left.

Reid Wallace followed with a three-point basket for a 64-61 advantage and the Javelinas would not trail again as they outscored Commerce (9-5, 2-2) 14-8 from that point on.

Whitley, who led all players with 21 points, tied the game at 66 with a pair of free throws with 3:39 left.
Bailey gave the Hoggies the lead for good with a jumper for a 68-66 advantage with 3:26 remaining. Daymon Warren scored on a lay-in off a Jamahl Brown assist with three minutes to go for a 70-66 lead.

Whitley made it a 70-69 contest with 1:45 remaining but would not score. The Lions, who shot over 60% against the nation's second-rank defense, missed their final three attempts from the field and were 1-of-7 in the final 3:39 to finish 51.6% in the half.

Kingsville led 37-28 at halftime after limiting Commerce to 33.3% shooting in the half. Wallace drained three free throws with one second remaining in the stanza.
The Javelinas, which shot 50% in the final half hit 46.6% of their shots in the game with five threes. They were 16-of-22 from the foul line for 72.7%. Commerce finished 43% from the floor and were 15-of-18 from the line.

Rashad Basey led the Javelinas with 16 points, while Brown added 12 and Bailey 10. Three other Hoggies had eight or more points as Warren had nine, with Wallace and Dytrel Bracey each adding eight. Warren just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds while adding a game-high two blocks as Kingsville finished with six.
Brown's 12 helped the Javelina bench outscore the visitor reserves 30-17.

Aside from Whitley's 21 points, Stefon Carson added 12 for Commerce.

Kingsville remains at home on Thursday when they host Eastern New Mexico at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. The women play at 10 a.m. and the men at noon as the teams welcome elementary students to the SPEC from across the region.
