KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville football team hosts long-time rival Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday evening in the 61st meeting between the two sides as the Javelinas celebrate its annual Kleberg Bank Homecoming Game at Javelina Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Javelinas enter the contest with a 2-2 mark and will be looking for their first Lone Star Conference win of the season. Commerce is 3-2 on the year and will also be looking to pick up their first win under first-year head coach Colby Carthel.
Entering this weekend's game, the Javelinas boast a 37-22-1 record against the Lions. The last 16 seasons the sides have done battle for the Chennault Cup with Kingsville winning 13 times. Last season, Commerce (formerly East Texas State) won 21-14 in overtime.
The Javelinas will be looking to snap a 2-game losing streak to conference leaders West Texas A&M and Midwestern State. Kingsville will look to get the offense back in sync with just 17 points the last two weeks. True freshman Caleb Bedford will make his second-straight start at quarterback and is one of four QBs to start a game this season.
Defensively, the Javelinas rank third in the Lone Star Conference in total defense. They are permitting just 365.5 yards a game, but are allowing 39.5 points a game. Commerce comes in with the second-best scoring offense in the league with 35.8 a game. Led by quarterback Tyrik Rollison, the Lions are second in passing with 1,565, but last in rushing.
The game will be broadcast over the Macareno Signs and Graphics of Alice Javelina Radio Network. The network stations are flagship station SportsRadio Corpus Christi (96.1 FM, 103.3 FM and 1230 AM). It can be heard on KOPY 92.1 FM in Alice, KTAI 91.1 FM in Kingsville, and KGGB 96.3 FM and 105.9 FM in Yorktown.
