KINGSVILLE, Texas - Texas A&M-Kingsville juniors Kelsey Washington and Stephanie Johns were recognized by the Lone Star Conference on Tuesday prior to the Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg Dig Pink match for their play as the Javelinas went 3-0 on the volleyball court last weekend.
Washington, who shared Offensive Player of the Week honors with West Texas A&M's Lauren Bevan, led the Javelinas in kills in all three matches. In the Javelinas 3-set sweep of Incarnate Word, Washington had eight kills and nine digs. The junior had double-doubles against Texas Woman's and A&M-Commerce and now has seven on the season. She had 14 kills and 15 digs to lead the Javelinas over the Pioneers as TWU suffered its first LSC loss. Against Commerce, she finished with 18 kills and had 25 digs.
Stephanie Johns had tremendous week blocking for the Javelinas with 16 blocks to share LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors with WT's Laura Iwuchukwu. She had three blocks in a sweep of the Cardinals. She then matched her season-high of seven blocks against TWU to go with 13 kills. Johns hit .423 over the Pioneers with two errors in 26 total swings. Against Commerce, she had six blocks and 13 kills. She hit .281 against the Lions. For the week, Johns had 31 kills and a .379 hitting percentage. She averaged 2.38 kills and one assist.
The Javelinas have two more Kleberg Bank Homecoming matches at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court this week. Cameron visits on Friday at 7 p.m., while Midwestern State comes to town at 1 p.m. Saturday.
