VICTORIA, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team snapped a 2-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader versus Houston-Victoria on Friday night. After winning the opener 9-4, the Javelinas completed the sweep of the doubleheader with a 4-0 win.
The two teams will play a single 9-inning game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
In the opening game, the Javelinas crossed the plate nine times in seven innings. The Hoggies scored runs in four of the final five innings.
After the two sides each scored twice in the third, Kingsville took the lead for good by rallying for three runs with two outs in the fourth. Cash Barker walked to start the rally and moved to third on a single by Dustin Aguilar.
Barker broke the tie by scoring on a single by Joe Tallerine, while Aguilar scored on a throwing error by the catcher Brandon Bohanon. A double by Ben Villafuerte capped the three-run inning as Tallerine plated.
The Jaguars pulled to within a run with two more runs off of Dallas Ponder (4-0). However, the Javelinas relief duo of Denver Diefenbach and Miles Holcomb combined to toss three innings of scoreless baseball. Diefenbach allowed a pair of hits while Holcomb struck out two in a perfect inning of work.
The offense added insurance for the bullpen.
After Tallerine picked up his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, Kingsville added three in the seventh. James Black had a two-run double in the inning and scored on a single by Barker.
Four Javelinas had two hits apiece in the opening game. Chris Ballou, Tallerine, Barker and Aguilar each had two hits.
In the second game, Zachary Pettiford tossed a 7-inning, complete game shutout in the 4-0 win. He scattered five hits while striking out three with no walks. The complete-game shutout was the first of the season by a Javelina pitcher and first of Pettiford's career.
Kingsville scored single runs in the first and second innings before crossing the plate twice in the fifth.
Taylor Taksa drove in the game's opening run with a triple driving in Villafuerte, who reached on an infield single.
James Black crossed the plate in the second. He led off the inning with a single and scored on a 2-out single by Tallerine.
A triple by Matt Perez in the fifth knocked in the other two runs. Villafuerte singled to start the inning and went to second on a walk. Both advanced after a sacrifice bunt by Ballou.
