STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team split with Tarleton State in their last doubleheader to end the regular season, 4-3 and 10-8.
Tarleton ends their season 26-22, overall and 16-18 in conference.
Game two proved to be a heated battle between the Texans and Javelinas.
In the first inning, Kingsville scored the first run of the game when Derrick Walls came across home plate after Ryan Guedry reached on a fielder's choice, 1-0.
Tarleton would answer with five runs in the bottom of the inning. To start the scoring rally, Alvaro Moreno came across home plate after Garrett Kilgore hit a sacrifice fly to center field, 1-1. Moreno doubled to get on second and advanced to third after Rustin Thomas singled through the left side. Thomas scored on a passed ball, 2-1.
Jonathan Schmitz scored for the Texans when Luke Slentz singled up the middle, 3-1. Schmitz got on base with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. Slentz came across home plate with a single to right field from Jake Klauck, 4-1. Slentz singled to reach first, advanced to second on an error and to third when Kevin Meredith single to third base. The last run of the inning came when Meredith scored on an error, 5-1.
The Javelinas scored one run in the third, fourth, and fifth inning while Tarleton scored just two in the fourth. In the third inning, Kingsville's run was scored when Miles Holcomb drove in Matt Perez with a sacrifice fly to left field, 5-2. Travis Laird hit a home run in the fourth to make the score, 5-3.
Thomas would respond for the Texans with a two run homer and drove in Christopher Patton, 7-3.
The Hoggies scored the only run of the fifth inning when Julian Duran hits a home run, 7-4.
Kingsville erupted late in the game by scoring four runs in the sixth inning and two in the eighth. Laird scored the first run of the sixth when Duran hit a fly ball in to center field, 7-5. He walked to reach first base, advanced to second on a single by Jimmy Roche, and to third on an error. The second run came as Roche scored when Perez doubled to left field, 7-6. He reached first with a single and advanced to second on an error. Walls scored the third run as he came in after Guedry grounded out to the short stop, 7-7. He reached first on an error and advanced to third as Perez doubled. The last run of the inning was scored when Cline Andrews walked and drove in Perez, 8-7.
In the eighth inning, Holcomb scored the Hoggies two runs when he homered to drive in Ryan Fickel, 10-7.
Tarleton would score the last run of the game in the ninth inning. Slentz drove in Noel Navarez on a fielder's choice, which resulted in Jared Musgrove being out on the play.
Ryan Benitez (4-1) snaps up the win for the Javelinas with 3.1 innings pitched with no runs with none earned on two hits. Hayden James picks up his first save of the season with one run with one earned on three hits.
Troyal Yosko (2-3) suffered the loss for the Texans as he pitched .2 innings with one run with one earned on one hit.
In game one, Kingsville scored the first run in the first inning when Perez singled through the right side to drive in Walls. Walls walked to first and reached second on an error in a failed pickoff attempt, 1-0.
The Texans countered with a two run second inning. The first run came in as Evan Robinson hitting a single through the left side drove in Kilgore, 1-1. Kilgore walked to first, advanced to second when Slentz was walked, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Slentz scored the second run when Moreno hit a sacrifice fly to center field, 2-1. He walked to first, advanced to second on a passed ball, and advanced to third when Robinson singled.
Laird scored the only run of the third inning, for the Javelinas, when he homered, 2-2.
Kingsville escaped the fourth inning with a fantastic triple play. Robinson lined out to Walls, at shortstop that threw to Perez at second base and he threw to Taylor Taska at first base. Robinson, Meredith and Slentz were all out on the play.
Tarleton scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nevarez doubled down the left field line and drove in Thomas and Musgrove, 4-2. Musgrove reached first after he singled to right field and advanced to second after Thomas reached on a fielder's choice.
Kingsville tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh inning but fell short. The Javelinas scored just one run when Walls singled up the middle to drive in Holcomb, 4-3. Holcomb walked to first, advanced to second when Andrews hit a fly ball to right field, and moved to third when Laird hit a fly ball to right field.
Denver Diefenbach (9-3) suffered the loss for Kingsville as he pitched 4.1 innings with four runs with four earned on five hits.
Robert Baker (6-6) picked up the win for the Texans with a complete game. He ended the game with three runs with two earned on five hits.
The Javelinas wrap up regular season play with a 34-16 overall, and 24-11 in conference. The team prepares to host the LSC Baseball Post Season Tournament from May 8th - 10th.
