KINGSVILLE, Texas - Three Javelina pitchers combined to throw a 4-hit shutout as the 10th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team downed South Texas rival A&M International 5-0 on Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field.
Kingsville is 19-5 on the season, while A&M-International falls to 16-11.
Taylor Taska, who drove in the game's first run to help his cause, went six innings in his first start of the season scattering two hits with a strikeout to move to 3-0 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 0.59. Weston Silverburg tossed a scoreless seventh, while Tres Tyler closed out the game by tossing two innings of 1-hit baseball. He struck out four. As a group, the threesome walked three batters in the game as the team completed its six shutout of the season.
The offense supported the pitching with timely hitting.
The Javelinas struck early with a run in the bottom of the first. Dustin Aguilar led off the frame with a double down the line in right. After moving to third on a grounder, he crossed the plate as Taska grounded to short.
The Javelinas extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Ballou singled to start the inning. He moved to second as Matt Perez walked. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Guedry.
Kingsville added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out rally. After a double play by the Dustdevils, Guedry singled to left and went to second was Black walked. After an infield single by James Wallace loaded the bases, Julian doubled into the left field corner to drive in a pair of runs for the 5-0 lead
The Javelinas host Abilene Christian this weekend in Lone Star Conference action. The series begins at 6 p.m. Friday with a single game. Saturday's action consists of a doubleheader at 1 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
