For the second time this season, Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball players Taylor Taska and Dallas Ponder have been recognized by the Lone Star Conference for their performances on the diamond. This time the duo is being honored for their play in winning the conference series with Angelo State 3-1.
Taska was named the LSC's co-Hitter of the Week, batted .444 for the week and was 6-of-15 in the series at Angelo State. Of his eight hits on the week, four were doubles and one was a home run. He finished with an .833 slugging percentage and had a .545 on-base percentage. Taska had four RBI and six runs scored. He scored three runs in the series opener with Angelo and two in the finale of the series. Against St. Mary's in a mid-week game, Taska was 2-for-3 at the plate and tossed a 1-2/3 innings of scoreless baseball with two strikeouts.
Ponder moved to 6-0 on the season in as many starts on Friday. It was the second-straight shutout on the game and won for the fourth time versus a ranked opponent. He allowed just four hits and struck out five. Just three Angelo runners advanced into scoring position in the game. Ponder has not allowed a run in over 14 innings.
Both received POW honors the first week of the season after the Javelinas went 3-1 at the Astros in Action D2 Baseball Invitational. They both shared the award with players from Abilene Christian. Kyle Giusti was the co-Hitter of the Week, while Ty Taylor was co-Pitcher of Week.
The Javelinas and Wildcats both went 3-1 to open the LSC portion of their schedules. The teams meet each other this weekend in Kingsville for 4-game series at Nolan Ryan Field beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Prior to the weekend series, the Javelinas will host Texas A&M International this Tuesday as part of Pack the House Night sponsored by New York Life Insurance.
