CORPUS CHRISTI - Police say 37-year-old Richard Jaquez is the man responsible for the armed robbery of Tobacco Junction on Ayers Street this morning. Jaquez was tracked down by Senior Officer Jason Lavastida and his K9 partner, Indy.
The clerk at the smoke shop says she's never been more terrified in her life. Just an hour into her shift Norma Hernandez had the scare of a lifetime. "All I was really looking at was the gun pointing at me," she told us.
She thought a customer walked in, but instead he asked for cigarettes and let her know she was being robbed.
"First thing that came to mind was my kids, and how, what was anybody going to say to them, Christmas is coming around and, I thought of, all sorts of people came rushing to my mind real quick," said Norma.
Hernandez says she's pretty sure the man has never been in the store before. There are six surveillance cameras placed in the tiny little shop. Police say that helped identify the man seen in the shop as man they caught in the adjacent neighborhood.
Hernandez also helped make a positive identification. "You'll remember a face when they're sticking a gun at you," she remarked.
It took about a dozen officers to close down Naples and Christi Streets as they searched house to house with two K9 units.
"It would have been much more difficult and it would have taken one of us to crawl under that house, it was a very small space," said Sr. Officer Lavastida.
As for Norma, she's not going to let today stop her from getting back to her life. She went right back behind the counter and told us, "I'm going to be here tomorrow, 8 in the morning."
Police say they have not recovered the handgun used in the robbery. They are also looking for a bag of cash and the jumpsuit the suspect was wearing at the time.
Jaquez is charged with aggravated robbery and evading arrest. We've learned that he was already wanted in Nueces County for non-payment of child support.
