CORPUS CHRISTI - We have another special report on where your tax dollars go. This past December, the city paid a company called Baker and Taylor nearly $20,000.

The company is one of the vendors that our city library system uses to get its books and other materials, and that money is just a small amount of what the company will end up getting paid.

The library is contracted with them for $216,000 worth of materials for this year.

Interim Library Director Laura Garcia told us that Baker and Taylor, like all vendors, was selected through a bidding process. Typically, the library selects one vendor a year, and the city council pre-approves the amount of money they will spend.

And when it comes to what materials the library will buy, most of them come from suggestions from the public.

So, throughout the year, the library buys books, Cd's, and DVD's to add to its collection, but the vendor is only paid after each order arrives.

"When we receive the item, we have to make sure it's in good condition, you know, that it's what we ordered, that it's not the wrong copy. Sometimes, we want a hard copy, maybe they're only sending us paperbacks," Garcia says.

And when the year is done, the library goes back out for bid, deciding whether they'll stay with the current supplier or switch to a new one.

It's free to check out materials at the library, and you can keep the items for 14 days. With six locations and a collection of over 400,000, Garcia says it's a great source for the community.

"There are still individuals who love to read, and it can be expensive, you know, $30 for a book, but where you can come and get it for free, that really helps," Garcia says.
