CORPUS CHRISTI - We continue our special reports on where your tax dollars go. Tonight, we focus on those traffic cameras that catch drivers running red lights from time to time.
The city pays a company called Redflex for those cameras, and in the month of December, the cost was nearly $68,000.
In the past year, the cameras have caught around 22,000 drivers running red lights, generating a revenue of roughly $1.8 million in tickets.
Half of that revenue goes to the state, the other half goes to paying Redflex for the cameras, maintaining the cameras, and paying the employees who run the office.
One officer checks the photos that come in to make sure the violations are legitimate.
In fact, of the more than 29,000 times the camera flashed in the last year, only 22,000 resulted in potential violations.
So, the office pays for a hearing officer as well. Someone you can plead your case to if you received a ticket and you feel you shouldn't have.
Currently, there are cameras in 13 intersection around town.
Officer Mark Gutierrez manages the office and says they're placed at intersections expected to produce a high number of violations.
"Redflex will actually come down and they will monitor an intersection for a given amount of time, and what they'll do is they'll do a count of how many violations there are at that intersection," he says.
So the next time you're trying to catch the light, remember that these cameras are well funded, and so is the administration behind them.
A typical ticket for a red light violation is $75.
