CORPUS CHRISTI - In order to stay clean and uniform on the job, Wastewater employees wear uniforms. this gear is ordered in bulk through G&K Services
Wastewater workers spend most of their days digging in the dirt with shovels and backhoes, pulling out old clay lines and replacing them with PVC pipes. Each year, the city of Corpus Christi provides each of its 150 plus employees with five sets of uniforms consisting of a shirt and pants from a company called G&K Services.
"When customers see people pulling up we want them to feel comfortable. So when they see the truck, the logo, they see the uniforms, the shirt, the ID badge, they feel safe," Michael Richardson, Wastewater Supervisor
In December of 2012, the city paid g&k services $15,623. We were given limited information from the city and told quote, "We would pay these invoices every month assuming we have the same number of employees every month who need uniforms". So that would come out to $187,476 dollars for 2012, assuming the city pays the same amount each month. Because of the nature of their work Richardson says these uniforms prevent his employees from soiling their own clothes.
"They can keep it separate when they are at home so they aren't mixing their clothes with the family and regular clothing," says Richardson.
These uniforms are generally ordered once a year, but Richardson says they will periodically order some outside the bulk order for any temporary employee.
