CORPUS CHRISTI - We have another special report on where your tax dollars are going. Charlie's Place is a local rehab center for drug and alcohol addiction. In December, it received more than $64,000 in grant funds through the city.

The grant is a federal grant called The Community Development Block Grant. It's federal money that the city can use to help local organizations.

It's a competitive grant, and Charlie's place won it after competing with the organizations that had to present plans to the city detailing how they would use the potential money.

Charlie's Place is using the money to put in a new outdoor recreation area for it's patients.

It will have a walking trail, ropes course, and zen garden to name a few features.

Chief Operating Officer Amy Granberry says outdoor activities can help to replace old behaviors for someone suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.

"When you look at someone who's been using drugs or alcohol for a long period of time, they may not know how to enjoy themselves and do something fun on the weekend without those chemicals," she says.

Around 2,000 people come through the center a year, and a good portion of the center's operating costs are paid for through another federal grant called the Continuum of Care Grant.

Nueces County helps secure that grant for the center by matching a portion of it, which adds up to $45,000 a year.

Patients usually stay for 30 to 40 days at Charlie's Place and Granberry says the results are usually gratifying.

"We have people that have graduated and they've got jobs. They give back to their community, they give back to us," she says.

And after securing that grant for their outside area, the center will be better than ever.
