It's Your Money: Bay Ltd.

CORPUS CHRISTI - We have another special report on how the city spends your tax dollars. The city is currently paying contractor Bay Limited nearly $2 million a month for on-going construction projects around town.
In fact, currently, Bay Ltd. is working on 17% of all construction projects in the city.
"They bring some strengths to the table that we appreciate and they do good work for us," city engineer Dan Biles says.
Right now, there's about $200 million worth of construction projects going on around town, and Bay Ltd. has secured four of those contracts, totaling $33.5 million.
The bulk of that money comes from two projects. One is the construction work on South Staples street from Holly to Saratoga, a contract worth $15.4 million. The other is a runway extension project at Corpus Christi Airport, and that contract is worth $12.8 million.
Biles says Bay Ltd. Is one of several local companies that often bid on projects. He says the more companies they have to choose from, the better.
"A diversity of contractors increases the competitive nature of the process, which usually results in better prices for the city," he says.
He added that having established local companies to choose from is an asset.
"Some contractors, I know this is what they bring to the table and this is where I need to watch them, and then others, I know that things are a little bit different. And so I know what their strengths and weaknesses are and yeah, that definitely is helpful," Biles says.
The other two projects Bay Ltd. is currently working are the construction on Buddy Lawrence street and construction out on County Road 52 near the Five Points area.
