It's Your Money: Animal Control Supplies

CORPUS CHRISTI - We continue our special report on following where your tax dollars are going. In the month of December, the city paid nearly $10,000 to Webster's Veterinary Supplies.
The company provides medical supplies to Corpus Christi Animal Control. Supplies like gloves, medications, and syringes. Basically, everything a veterinarian would need to operate.
The company is paid ever several months as supplies are needed, and in the last four months, they've been needed a lot more.
Since September, the number of adoptions from the Animal Control shelter has gone from 30 a month to over 100. And all those pets need to be spayed or neutered before going home with their new owner.
Commander Todd Green with the Corpus Christi Police Department oversees Animal Control.
"The number of surgeries that we were doing over that time period increased along with the number of adoptions. So, that's a good thing," he says.
The increase largely came from a simpler, quicker adoption process that reduced the amount of paperwork for potential pet owners.
In fact, there were 788 animals adopted in 2012. That's more than double 2011, which had 373.
"The more adoptions we do, the more supplies we need, the more that we have to purchase," Green says.
And the goal going forward is to to get even more animals adopted.
"It's a tough job because we still have to euthanize more animals than we actually are able to adopt," Green says.
Hopefully, those medical supplies keep coming, because that means thatmore animals are headed for new homes.
