CORPUS CHRISTI - We continue our special report on where city tax dollars go, and tonight, we focus on a company called Primetime.
The city paid the company nearly $3,000 in the month of December, and as we found out, the money goes towards programs that are all about the kids.
Primetime teaches two classes at recreation centers and gyms around the city.
One is a cheerleading class and the other is a bit more intense, a class designed to teach kids how to defend themselves against strangers.
It's called "Stranger Rangers", and instructor Nick Perez says the first thing they do is teach the kids the difference between a kidnapper and a good stranger. They teach them that a good stranger is someone who can help them, like a policeman, fireman, or teacher.
And if they do come across a kidnapper, the kids are shown what to do.
Perez shows them basic techniques, like how to get out of a hold if a stranger grabs them by the arm or wrist.
Perez says it's all about using body weight and momentum against the bigger, stronger kidnapper.
The classes run in the fall and spring, and go for 16 weeks. There's a fee of $40 per month for each child.
The city Parks and Recreation Department says about 400 kids ranging from three to 13 years old usually participate.
And that's something Perez is glad to hear, because he knows the value of the training.
"As long as their technique is good, and they have practice, there's no one they can't get away from," Perez says.
In short, a little boost in strength and confidence goes a long way.
