CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-13, 25-21) over Prairie View A&M (9-23) Tuesday evening in non-conference play at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders (15-10) snapped a three-match losing skid and 14 players saw action in the match.
Haley Satterwhite Day powered the Islanders' offense with eight kills while Ivy Baresh and Brianna Brink each chipped in seven kills apiece. Logen Bourque recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 44 assists and 10 digs. Shayla Maldonado propelled the defense with 15 digs and Baresh added 11 digs. Freshmen Shaquinn Parker and Morgan Carlson tallied four block assists apiece to help the Islanders out-block the Lady Panthers 8-3. The Islanders hit .278 in the match and limited PVAM to just .046 hitting.
The Islanders jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the opening set before the Panthers took the lead at 7-6 on a 3-0 run. After rallying back-and-forth the Islanders garnered the lead for good at 9-7 after straight kills by Ashley Phelps and Sarah Sanchez. The Islanders extended its lead to 19-13 on a 3-0 run and capped the set on a 5-0 to win 25-15. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit .353 in the set behind Phelps' six kills.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi surged out to a 12-7 lead in the second set after a kill by Satterwhite. The Islanders padded its lead to 19-9 after putting together an 8-0 run. During the stretch, Nicole Soifua added a pair of kills, Satterwhite, Brink and Carlson each added a kill and Megan Olivarez chipped in an ace. After rallying back-and-forth, the Islanders finished the set with a 25-13 victory.
Prairie View A&M gained momentum in the third set which featured 10 ties and seven lead changes. The Lady Panthers and Islanders stayed even early on before the Islanders built a 13-11 lead with three straight points. The Lady Panthers evened the set at 14-14 with two straight points. The Islanders followed with a 6-1 run to push ahead for good at 20-15. After a Prairie View A&M timeout, the Islanders traded points before back-to-back kills by the Lady Panthers pulled the visitor's within three. Satterwhite followed with a kill before the two teams traded points. Bourque tacked on an ace to make it 24-19. The Lady Panterhs followed with consecutive kills before Soifua clinched the set at 25-21 with her fourth kill of the match.
The Islanders will continue play at home Thursday, Oct. 31, when it host Nicholls in conference play. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
