CORPUS CHRISTI - Jacob Dorris had a tremendous performance out of the bullpen and Tyler Ware hit a two-run home run to lead the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team to a 4-1 victory over Oral Roberts on Saturday night. It marked the seventh straight win for the Islanders (25-19, 14-6 Southland), who remained in a tie for first place with Nicholls.
Dorris allowed just one base runner - on an eighth inning walk - and struck out seven in 3.0 innings of work to slam the door on the Golden Eagles' comeback efforts to collect his fifth save of the season. His work preserved a win for Trevor Belicek, who scattered eight hits and two walks in six innings, allowing just one unearned run to go with five strikeouts. Gavin Glanz was carded with a tough-luck loss, allowing just four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Brandon Tierney went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI at the plate, while Ware, Jordan Lee, Cody Stephens and Russell Vaughan each collected one hit. Logan Domenico and Austen Colt each collected two hits in a losing effort for Oral Roberts (22-20, 9-11).
It was quite the pitcher's duel out of the gate, with Glanz and Belicek each putting zeroes on the scoreboard every frame through five. Glanz had to work around some danger in the second, as the first two hitters reached and moved to second and third with one away. But Glanz bounced back with a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
ORU was the first to crack the scoreboard, plating a run in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead. A single, a strikeout and an error resulted in runners on first and second. Belicek got the next batter to pop out, but Anthony Sequeira followed up with a single up the middle, as Jose Trevino beat the throw home for the first run of the game.
But that lead was short-lived, as the Islanders came right back in the bottom of the frame. Tierney looped a single into center to lead off the inning, and Ware followed by launching a ball deep to right field. The prevailing wind gave Ware just enough to get over the wall for his third home run of the season, putting the home squad back ahead 2-1.
ORU looked to counter in the top of the seventh, getting a pair of singles and a hit batsman to chase Belicek from the game. Dorris came on with the bases loaded and nobody out, and went on to strike out the three and four hitters for ORU, Trevino and Tyler Boss, and then finish off the inning with a groundout to leave all three runners where he inherited them.
His teammates responded on the offensive side of the seventh, with Zack Gibson earning his way on base by way of a hit by pitch with one away. A fielder's choice left Josh Garza on first with two down, and Lee followed with a triple into the right-field corner to push the lead to 3-1. Tierney followed, and promptly sent a ball into left field, plating Lee, to give the home squad a three-run lead heading to the eighth.
Dorris kept his foot on the gas, allowing a leadoff walk in the eighth, but coming back with two strikeouts and a groundout to end the frame. In the ninth, he put the cherry on top of his save, striking out Domenico, Matt Brandy and Trevino in order to finish off the victory.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. on Chapman Field. Live stats and video will be available on GoIslanders.com, and live updates will be provided on Twitter (@IslandersBSB).
