Islanders Take Part in Marine-Style Workout at NAS-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI - For the second consecutive year the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's basketball team took part in a special workout at the Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi. The Islanders went through specific drills designed by the Marines on Friday morning starting at 6 a.m.

The workout consisted of two events, the log drill and the pugil stick tournament. In the log drill, the Islanders separated into a four-person team and carried a log that was approximately 300 pounds. As they carried the log around a 0.96 mile course, the Islanders faced different physical and mental challenges that they had to work through to accomplish the drill.

"I think it's an awesome experience and I think it's really important for the development of our basketball team," head coach Willis Wilson said. "Our guys have to get comfortable going places they haven't been before. When you go to the NCAA tournament it's so foreign compared to what you face during the regular season and you have to be comfortable getting out of your routine. I think this sort of training will really parallel something that we will be able to draw upon for later in the season."

In the pugil stick tournament, the Islanders battled each other one-on-one in a single elimination tournament. In the end it was redshirt junior Bryce Douvier claiming the title over former Islander James King.

The Marine-style drills today concluded a series of workouts with the Marines this summer. Prior to a competition with the Marines on the campus beach last week, the Islanders took part in a circuit-style training course the week before.
