AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team wrapped play today at the Texas Classic with a 3-0 victory over Memphis at Red & Charline McCombs field. After early morning storms pushed the game back 30 minutes the Islanders' (1-4) bats came alive and out hit the Tigers (1-4) 4-1 to clinch their first victory of the season.

"I could not be more proud of the way our team came out today," Head Coach Stephanie Hughes said. "We were focused, hit well and pitched well. Constance did a great job in the circle. We have things to work on to get better but the team played hard all weekend. It's great to finish off the weekend with a win."

The Islanders' defense came through today leaving eight Tigers stranded on base. Constance Brandenburg (1-2) had an impressive day in the circle with a career-high eight strikeouts in seven innings. The junior allowed just one hit in the final frame and five walks total while facing 29 batters.

Meagan Mckinney, Valerie Perez, Katelyn Potts and Hayley Galloway each recorded one hit apiece. McKinney blasted her second home run of the Texas Classic and eighth career homer while Potts posted her first triple of her career. McKinney, Perez and Lindsey Lyles all registered RBIs.

The Islanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame with a solo home run by McKinney. The Islanders held Memphis scoreless through the second and tacked on another run in the top of the third. With one out, McKinney reached base on a walk before scoring on an RBI double by Perez to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.

Galloway followed suit with a single to shortstop with two outs in the top of the fourth for the Islanders' third hit of the day. Both teams were held scoreless through the fourth and fifth frames until Potts opened the top of the sixth with a leadoff triple to center field and scored the Islanders' third run after Lindsey Lyles reached base on a fielding error to pad the lead to 3-0.

The Islanders loaded the bases in the top of the seventh after Mickayla Cochran advanced to second on a Dani Tefft fielder's choice after reaching base on a walk. McKinney followed with a walk and Perez loaded the bases after she was hit by the pitch. However, the Tigers escaped the jam with a strikeout.

Brandenburg held the Tigers' scoreless through six innings. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Harrell reached on a fielding error before Bradenburg recorded her eighth strikeout of the game to tally the second out. Lelani Bernardino singled up the middle to put runners on first and second, however the Islanders ended the inning with a forced play at third base.

Ellen Roberts (0-3) took the loss for the Tigers. She allowed four hits and three runs while striking out six batters and walking four in seven innings.

The Islanders will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the three-day Miken Classic on Feb. 15-17, hosted by Baylor University. The Islanders will take on Northern Colorado, University of the Pacific and Baylor.
