HOUSTON - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi baseball team saw its offense explode in its series opener with Houston Baptist, as they picked up a 14-1 run-rule victory in seven innings Friday at Husky Field to snap a three-game losing streak.
Tyler Ware had his biggest day as an Islander, as he notched a career-high five runs driven in, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Cody Stephens and Jordan Lee joined him with three hits, as Stephens drove in three RBIs, while also scoring three runs, and Lee scored two runs, while also stealing his team-high 16th base.
Matt Danton took advantage of the Islanders' big lead throughout the game, as he went six innings, giving up just one run on five hits to earn his fifth win of the year.
The Islanders (18-18, 8-5 Southland) got rolling in a hurry, picking up three consecutive hits to take a 1-0 lead out of the gate, culminating on a RBI double by Frankie Salas.
After Stephens got hit by a pitch to load the bases, Ware came through with his first RBI, as he moved everyone up a station with a single in right to double the Islanders' lead.
Then after HBU (15-15, 5-8) starter Taylor Wright got his first out of the game on a strikeout, he walked the next batter, Russell Vaughan, to bring in another run. The righty came back to get another strikeout, before another bases loaded walk to Josh Garza ended Wright's day, while also putting the Islanders up 4-0.
However, his replacement's day didn't start on a positive not, as Matt Harding came on and threw a wild pitch to the first batter he faced, allowing Ware to come in for the fifth and final run of the first.
With a big lead, Danton came out and went about his normal business, pitching to contact, picking up a fly out and two groundouts to set the Huskies down in order in the first.
In the second, Ware picked up his second RBI of the game, as he sent a pitch deep into left with Salas standing on third to extend the Islanders lead to six.
However, the third HBU pitcher, Ross Kennell, settled things down for the Huskies, as he threw three scoreless innings from the third to the fifth. After Kennell set the Islanders down in the fifth, his offense was able to pull HBU back within five, as a grounder with runners on the corners brought in the Huskies first run of the game.
However, Kennell had a tough fourth inning, as he was just one out away from posting his fourth consecutive scoreless inning before Stephens singled to left to bring Lee in to score to push the lead back up to six.
Ware then followed up with another huge knock, as he notched his third triple of the season by sending one in the left center gap to drive in two more runs. Kyle Danford then picked up his first RBI of the game, driving one up the middle to bring Ware around to score to make it a 10-1 game after the top of the sixth.
After Danton bounced back to post a scoreless bottom half of the inning, the Huskies struggled to come up with that elusive third out once again in the seventh. With two away, the Islanders had runners on the corners before Hubert picked up his first RBI of the season with a double down the left field line to push the lead to 10.
Stephens then came up and almost blasted his first home run of the season, as he drilled a double off the top of the left field wall to bring in two more runs before Ware picked up his fifth and final RBI of the game, as he singled up the middle to plate Stephens to push the lead up to 14-1.
Dalton D'Spain came on in the seventh and threw a perfect 1-2-3 innings to easily secure the run-rule victory for A&M - Corpus Christi.
Game two of the series will get underway an hour earlier on Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. Trevor Belicek (1-5, 4.75 ERA) will get the nod for the Islanders, as he will face off against HBU's Ryan Lower (4-1, 2.23).
