NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team fell 6-0 to Stephen F. Austin Sunday in the series finale at Ladyjacks Softball Field. The Islanders outhit the Ladyjacks for the third straight game but a tough four-run bottom of the fifth by SFA helped seal the victory for the home team.
Laura Phillips went 2-for-3 to lead the Islanders' (9-35, 4-17 SLC) offense while Mickayla Cochran, Lindsey Lyles, Valerie Perez, Meagan McKinney and Dani Tefft each tallied one hit apiece.
Elizabeth Arana went 2-for-4 to chip in two of the Ladyjacks (14-28, 7-14 SLC) six hits while Angela White picked up the victory in the circle for SFA in seven innings.
Lyles hit a single with two outs through the left side for the Islanders' first hit of the game in the opening frame. Phillips followed with a dropper with two outs to center field in the top of the second before the Islanders' bats tallied two hits in the top of the third. Tefft led things off with a single to shortstop and landed on second after Cochran reached on a bunt single in front of home plate. Hayley Galloway then advanced Tefft to third and Cochran to second on a sacrifice bunt to third base. However, SFA's White retired the next two Islanders to pull the Ladyjacks out of the frame.
Constance Brandenburg held the Ladyjacks without a hit through two innings. SFA got on board in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits. After back-to-back singles to start the frame, Shalie Day hit a two-run double to right center to give the Ladyjacks a 2-0 lead.
Stephen F. Austin extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on three hits and a couple Islanders' mishaps to take a 6-0 lead. Lindsay Campell reached on a fielder's choice to plate Heather Hollingsworth, in to pinch run for Day, who reached on a walk. Bethany Brown then followed with a 2 RBI single up the middle to score Shanice Love and Lindsay Campbell and give SFA a 5-0 lead. Love reached on a single through the left side and Campbell reached on a fielder's choice. The Ladyjacks plated their sixth run after Brown scored on a Arana RBI single to right field.
Brandenburg (6-14) took the loss for the Islanders. The junior allowed six hits and six runs, five of them earned, while walking six and striking out two in six innings.
White (5-14) earned the win for the Ladyjacks in seven innings. She allowed seven hits, and didn't give up a run or a walk, while striking out three in seven innings.
The Islanders will return home to Chapman Field for its final six conference games. First up is a three-game series against Nicholls State on Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.
