CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Baseball team had several opportunities on offense, but the New Mexico Lobos pitching staff stifled the chances with a 7-0 win on Friday night to open the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
The Islanders (3-3) stranded seven base runners while collecting just five hits as the arm of Lobos (2-2) starter AJ Carman delivered a gem through 7.0 innings. Carman allowed four of the five hits, while walking one and striking out three Texas A&M - Corpus Christi batters for his first win of the year. Tim Keller (1-1) was tagged with the loss after going 4.0 innings and allowing six runs, four of them earned, on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Islanders struggled in the field, allowing three unearned runs after committing four errors in the contest.
New Mexico started the scoring when Josh Melendez led off the game with a triple and was brought around to score on an RBI single by Mitch Garver to make it 1-0. An error extended the inning and made it a 2-0 score as DJ Peterson came home to score on the miscue.
It would be all the Lobos would need, as the Islanders threatened in several innings but were unable to plate and runs in the loss.
New Mexico added three runs in the third and one apiece in the fourth and fifth to finish the scoring at 7-0. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi held New Mexico scoreless over the final four innings as AJ Longoria pitched two shutout innings and Jacob Dorris came on to pitch the final frame in scoreless fashion.
The Islanders will return to the diamond at 6 p.m. on Saturday night to face No. 14 Oklahoma in the second game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic for the two teams. Trevor Foss will look to bounce the Islanders back from the loss, while Jonathan Gray will get the ball on the mound for the Sooners.
