CORPUS CHRISTI - Junior Ashley Darley tallied her second straight double-double but the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team suffered a 68-46 loss to Lamar Thursday night at the American Bank Center in the pink game.
Darley paced the Islanders (1-20, 0-10 SLC) with 11 points and matched her career-high with 12 rebounds. Jessica Jammer chipped in nine points and six rebounds and Verne'qua Taylor tied a season-high eight assists. The Islanders outrebounded Lamar (15-6, 8-3 SLC) 45-42 behind the help of Darley and Jammer.
Kalis Loyd powered the Lady Cardinals with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Alice Robinson added nine points and seven rebounds. Lamar tallied six from behind the arc and shot 58.8 percent from the free-throw line.
The Islanders jumped out to a 5-2 lead before both teams battled back and forth tying four times in the first half. Lamar grabbed the four-point advantage before Darley sank two from the free-throw line. However, Lamar built a 13-point cushion on an 11-0 run with 3:51 to play in the first half. Gregory got on board with a jumper to halt the run but the Lady Cardinals put together a 10-2 run to end the half.
Lamar went into the locker room with a 32-17 lead on 52 percent shooting from the field. Darley led the Islanders with six points and seven rebounds. The Islanders led the glass 20-16 behind Darley's boards and Jammer's five rebounds. Robinson and Loyd led the Lady Cardinals with six points each.
Lamar opened the second half with a layup before Alisa Roberts triggered the Islanders' first three of the game. The Lady Cardinals followed with a 5-0 run to pull ahead by 19 with 15 minutes to play. Jammer answered with her first three of the season and after a Loyd three-pointer, Jammer sank another from behind the arc. Brandi Huff hit a jumper to spark a 5-0 Islander run but Lamar answered right back with a three pointer from Carenn Baylor.
After another basket by Huff, Lamar put together a mini 4-0 run to pull ahead by 19 with 10:28. The Islanders and Lady Cardinals traded buckets back and forth before Roberts triggered her second three of the game after a Taylor jumper. The Islanders cut the lead to 13 with 5:20 to play, but Lamar built a 13-4 run to cap the scoring.
The Islanders will return to the American Bank Center on Saturday, Feb. 9 to host McNeese State. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
