CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team put together a 15-5 run to open the second half, rallying back from a 34-20 halftime deficit to trim the lead to seven, but it wasn't enough as the Texas State Bobcats (5-3) propelled their way to a 69-51 victory Saturday night at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (0-9) were paced by Alisa Roberts' season-high 16 points, including a season-best three from behind the arc. Freshman Janae Blount registered her seventh double-digit scoring game with 10 and dished out a season-high five assists while Jessica Jammer powered the glass with 10 boards, including seven from the defensive end. The Islanders also had a strong performance from Verne'qua Taylor who added six boards and a season-high eight assists, while Ashanti Plummer tallied a season-best nine points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. The Islanders' bench outscored the Bobcats 23-9 and gave up a season-low 12 turnovers.
Former Southland Conference leading scorer Diamond Ford led the Bobcats with 19 points, with Ashley Ezeh adding 15 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.
Texas State took a 34-20 lead at the half on 38.9 percent shooting from the field. Blount and Roberts paced the Islanders with eight points apiece, and Jammer led the Islanders' glass with six boards. Ezeh led the Bobcats with nine points and 10 boards.
The Islanders jumped out with a 15-5 run in the second half to trim the lead to seven with 12:44 to play. Texas State answered with a 16-5 run to push the lead to 20 with 4:50 to play. During the run the Bobcats triggered three of their nine three-pointers.
Morgan Schwartz, Taryn Gregory, Taylor, Roberts, and Jammer all received the starting nod for the Islanders, the first time that starting five has seen the floor together.
The Islanders will host Cornell on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the American Bank Center before traveling to Forth Worth to play TCU on Dec. 29 in the 2012 finale.
