SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In a game that featured 12 lead changes the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team (11-11, 4-7 SLC) was able to come away with a 60-56 victory against Incarnate Word (9-12, 2-7) in the McDermott Convocation Center.
Jasmine Shaw was on fire for the Islanders, recording her sixth game of the season with 20-plus points, as she was just one shy of her career high with 28 points. She went 11-18 from the field to go along with three triples.
Shola Adebayo also had a big game, accounting for 11 of the Islanders' 15 points off the bench.
A&M - Corpus Christi was right at its season mark in rebounds, pulling down 40 rebounds compared to the Cardinals' 28.
Once again the Islanders got off to a blazing start, as Shaw missed her first three-point attempt, but alertly collected her own rebound and put it home to put her team up two just seven seconds in. A Huff jumper extended the lead to 4-0 in under a minute of play.
The teams then traded buckets two times in a row to make it an 8-4 Islanders lead with 16:18 left to play in the half. However, a 6-0 run for UIW gave the home team its first lead six minutes into the game.
This was just one of nine lead changes on the half, with a trio of them coming in the next five minutes of play. With the score sitting at 17-16 in favor of the Islanders, Shaw knocked down her first three of the game to put the visitors up 20-16 with 9:06 to go in the first.
UIW came right back with a 5-0 run, though, with all of those points coming from Rose Whitehead, including just her second three of the season. This put the Cardinals up by one with 7:33 on the clock.
The teams traded buckets to account for two more lead changes before Shaw hit her second three of the night with 4:49 on the clock to already put her in double digits with 12 points and put her team up by two.
Coming right out of the timeout, the Cardinals kept the amount of lead changes on the rise, responding with a three of their own to put them back on top by one with just over two to go in the first.
UIW later extended its lead up to a first-half high of six points, but the Islanders scored four of the final five points in the last 1:16 of play to cut the deficit down to three heading into the half.
In the second half, Shaw got out to a fast start again with a layup eight seconds into the final 20 to pull the Islanders within one. Huff then made one of two from the line to knot the game at 32 with 18:38 to go.
After the teams traded buckets, the Cardinals strung off four points in a row to extend their lead out to six, which was their biggest of the game.
The Islanders pulled within five and then their three-point snipers took over, as Shaw and Brittany Mbamalu connected from long range on back-to-back possessions to put the Islanders back up 42-41 with 13:21 left in the game.
The lead didn't last long though, as UIW converted on its offensive possession to result in the 11th lead change of the game.
With the Cardinals still up one at 11:21, Mbamalu drilled her second three of the game to not only put her squad up two, but would also tie her for second in threes made in season by an Islander at 62.
After a Shaw layup put A&M - Corpus Christi up by four at 9:05, both teams struggled not making a field goal over the next four minutes.
It was Adebayo who finally put an end to the teams' cold streak with a steal and layup to put the Islanders up by five. The visitors then opened up their biggest lead of the game after Camesha Davis scooped up a missed lay in by Brandi Huff and put it home to put the Islanders up 53-46 with 3:51 to go.
UIW had one more push left, going on a 10-4 lead to make it a three-point game, but the Islanders iced the game at the free throw line to seal a huge victory.
A&M - Corpus Christi will finish up a four-game road trip on Saturday, as it takes on Abilene Christian for the first time in school history with tip set for 1 p.m.
