Islander Women Come Up Short in 60-51 Loss to Colonels on Senior Night

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women's basketball team battled with Nicholls State Saturday night in a game that featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes. The Islanders and Colonels went neck and neck throughout the game until a 9-0 run over the last couple minutes lifted the Colonels to a 60-51 victory Saturday night at the American Bank Center on senior night.

Brandi Huff tallied her fifth double-figure scoring game of the season with 12 points to pace the Islanders (3-24, 2-14 SLC). Ashanti Plummer matched her career-high of nine points while Verne'qua Taylor tallied a season-high eight points and a season-high five steals in 38 minutes. The Islanders grabbed the 45-40 board advantage and led the bench 25-11.

The Colonels (17-10, 9-7 SLC) were powered by three players in double-figure scoring, led by KK Babin's 19 points. Alisha Allen chipped in 17 points while Emani White added 11 points. The Colonels went 10-for-30 from behind the arc and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Jessica Jammer opened the game with a jumper inside from Imani Dunn before the Colonels got on board with a 5-0 run. After Plummer's layup and free throw knotted the score at 5-5 the Colonels answered with back-to-back free throws to take a 9-5 lead with 15 minutes to play in the half. Taylor followed with a dish to Jammer on the left wing for a three pointer to pull the Islanders within one. After a Colonels basket, Taryn Gregory nailed the Islanders' second three of the half to even the score at 11. A Babin basket followed before the Islanders took a 14-13 lead with a free throw from Ashley Darley and a layup by Huff.

Nicholls State pushed back ahead with a three pointer before the Islanders' garnered the 18-16 lead with a pair of free throws from Taylor and a layup from Janae Blount. The Islanders and Colonels battled back and forth over the next five minutes with four ties. However, Babin triggered a three with 13.7 seconds remaining to push the Colonels ahead by one at the half.

Nicholls took a 27-26 lead at the half behind Babin's 10 points. The Islanders shot 32.1 percent to the Colonels 25.7 percent. Plummer and Jammer paced the Islanders with five points apiece while Taylor and Huff each chipped in four each. Darley led the boards with four while Taylor added three steals in a first half that featured seven ties and five lead changes.

The Colonels gained momentum out of the half with a 5-0 run to take a six-point cushion. The Islanders put together a 4-0 run to trim the Colonels lead to two with a pair of free throws from Huff and a layup by Plummer. After a three pointer from the Colonels the Islanders put together a 6-0 run to take a 36-35 lead with 10:58 to play. During the stretch, Taylor added a bucket while Huff hit back-to-back baskets.

Allen added a layup for Nicholls State, but the Islanders responded with a 6-0 run to surge ahead 40-37 with just under eight to play. After a three pointer by White, Dunn added a layup to give the Islanders a four-point advantage. However, Nicholls State triggered back-to-back baskets from three-point land before Huff knotted the score at 46 with a dish inside from Taylor. Gregory followed with a trey from Taylor to give the Islanders a 49-46 lead with four to play.

The Colonels answered with their eighth three of the game with 3:43 to play to tie the game at 49. After trading baskets, Nicholls State put together a 9-0 run to seal a 60-51 victory.

Alisa Roberts, Plummer, Dunn, Jammer and Taylor all received the starting nod for the Islanders, the first time that starting five has seen the floor together and the 16th different starting lineup this season.

The Islanders will travel to Northwestern State and SFA next weekend. First up is Northwestern State on Thursday, March 7. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
