Islander Student-Athletes Score Big in Classroom

CORPUS CHRISTI - The NCAA released statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) on Thursday, Oct. 24, and these findings reveal a 77 percent graduation success rate overall for student-athletes at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. This is the second straight year that the Islanders have achieved a 77 percent rate and the seventh consecutive year of 75 percent or higher.

The Islanders' GSR was the highest overall among Southland Conference schools for the third consecutive year, with Oral Roberts matching the Islanders' 77. These GSR data are based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen between 2003-2006 and allow for the removal of those individuals who left the Island University in good academic standing prior to completing their eligibility.

"The success and graduation of our student-athletes is one of the central pieces of doing things The Islanders Way," Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. "I'm always proud to see continued success in our Graduation Success Rate, and once again we've proven to be one of the top programs at our level in the ratings. We still have some room to improve, but overall I'm quite pleased with this year's report."

The GSR is the NCAA's more inclusive calculation of student-athlete academic success. The NCAA rate is more accurate than the federally mandated methodology because it includes incoming transfers and students enrolling in the spring semester who receive athletic aid and graduate and deletes from the calculation student-athletes who leave an institution and were academically eligible to compete.

This is the 23rd release of institutional graduation rates since national "right-to-know" legislation was passed in 1990. In 2005, the NCAA Division I Committee on Academic Performance implemented the initial release of the team GSR data.

The Islanders women's golf team had a perfect GSR of 100 percent once again, while men's tennis (88), women's basketball (87), softball (83) and baseball (81) all had percentages over 80. The student-athletes at the Island University also eclipsed the general student body's graduation rate both for those entering the school in 2006-07 and over the four-year period ending that school year.
