SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team fell to North Texas and Purdue on the opening day of the CenturyLink Classic, hosted by Texas State at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The Islanders (5-12) dropped a 7-3 loss to North Texas before falling 3-0 to Purdue in the second game.
Leadoff hitter Mickayla Cochran highlighted the day for the Islanders going 4-for-6 in the two games combined.
The Islanders will continue play tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. when they take on former Southland Conference opponent Texas State before facing Purdue in the night cap at 5:30 p.m.

GAME 1: NORTH TEXAS 7, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 3
North Texas (8-9) tallied 11 hits en route to a 7-3 victory over the Islanders in the opening game of the CenturyLink Classic. Sophomore Mickayla Cochran went 2-for-3 to power the Islanders' bats.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Cochran scored on a passed ball after reaching base on a walk. The Mean Green put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second but the Islanders hurler Constance Brandenburg pulled the Islanders' out of the jam with a punch out.
North Texas answered in the bottom of the second with three runs on three hits. The Mean Green's Jackie Miller started things off with a single to second base before scoring on a Brooke Foster RBI single down the right field line. North Texas tacked on two more runs with two outs on a Jordan Terry single to right center. However, a ground out to Hayley Galloway at second ended the inning and the Islanders escaped with runners on second and third.
The Islanders pulled within one in the top of the third with one run on two hits. Galloway and Cochran sparked the inning with one out. Galloway reached on an error before Cochran ripped a single down the left field line. After a Dani Tefft ground out advanced Galloway to third and Cochran to second, Meagan McKinney delivered a RBI single to shortstop with two outs to plate Galloway.
The Mean Green extended their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third when Miller hit a 2-run homer to right center. Brandenburg and the Islanders' defense escaped the inning retiring North Texas' seven through nine batters.
North Texas put up a run in the fifth frame before sophomore Lindsey Lyles cranked her first career-homer over the left field wall in the top of the sixth with one out. The Mean Green capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with one run on three hits.
McKinney, Lyles and Natalie Zarzabal each added one hit apiece, while McKinney and Lyles each tallied one RBI each.
Brandenburg (3-5) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle. The junior allowed five hits and three walks while recording one strikeout in three innings. Bethany Slick came in for relief and tallied one strikeout while allowing six hits and a pair of runs in three innings.
Ashley Kirk (4-3) picked up the victory for the Mean Green in seven innings. She limited the Islanders to five hits while striking out 14 and walking two batters.
GAME 2: PURDUE 3, TEXAS A&M - CORPUS CHRISTI 0
The Islanders turned right around to face Purdue (7-9) in the second game of the CenturyLink Classic. The Boilermakers got on board in the first and second innings before adding a run in the fifth to seal a 3-0 victory over the Islanders.
The Islanders tallied three hits in the game, led by Cochran who went 2-for-3 and Mckinney who went 1-for-2.
Purdue started things off in the top of the first with one run on three hits. Ashley Burkhardt scored on an Andie Varsho single to second base after reaching on a leadoff walk. Islanders' hurler Ashley Elicerio pulled the Islanders out of the jam with bases loaded as Purdue's Ashley Courtney lined out to Elicerio in the circle.
Cochran led off the bottom frame with a double down the right field line. Galloway followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Cochran to third, however Mckinney grounded out to the pitcher and Lyles struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Boilermakers added another run in the second on one hit after Tori Chiodo walked and scored on a Lindsey Rains RBI ground out.
Cochran tallied her second hit of the game in the bottom of the third with a solo rip to third base and McKinney followed in the fourth with a single down the right field line.
Purdue recorded their third run of the game in the top of the fifth after the Boilermakers' Andie Varsho stole home after a single to shortstop.
Elicerio (1-6) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle in seven innings of work. She tallied one strikeout and allowed seven hits while facing 31 batters.
