AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team opened up the 2013 season Thursday night against No. 7/9 Texas and dropped a 6-0 loss at Red & Charline McCombs Field. The Longhorns' offense took control early in the first inning and tacked on three runs in the second and two in the sixth en route to five hits in the opening game.

Junior Constance Brandenburg took the loss for the Islanders (0-1), giving up six runs on five hits while walking five and striking out one in 5.1 innings. Freshman Ashley Elicerio relieved Brandenburg in the bottom of the sixth frame and allowed just one walk while facing four batters.

Texas scored first in the bottom of the opening frame with one out. The Longhorn's Karina Scott singled through the right side for an RBI single and plated Brejae Washington who reached base on an Islander fielding error. Washington stole second before scoring Texas' first run of the game with two outs.

The Longhorns' padded the lead to 4-0 in the second inning after Taylor Hoagland ripped a homer to left center to plate Gabby Smith and Mandy Ogle. Smith walked and Ogle reached base on a fielder's choice before Hoagland stepped up to the plate. The Longhorns tallied another hit after Washington singled to Mickayla Cochran in center field. The Islanders escaped after Kim Bruins flew out to Dani Tefft in left field.

In the top of the third, Hayley Galloway reached base on a throwing error with one out and advanced to second but was left stranded as Blaire Luna retired the next two Islanders. The Islanders placed another runner on second in the top of the fifth with one out. Junior J.J. Jackson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, however Luna pulled the Longhorns' out of the jam.

The Islanders held the Longhorns the next three innings until Texas put up two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Lindsey Stephens walked before Erin Shireman delivered a two-run homer to left center to give Texas a 6-0 lead. Elicerio relieved Brandenburg in the circle and escaped the inning leaving two Longhorns stranded.

Luna tallied her fifth career no-hitter while striking out 14 batters and walking two in seven innings.

The Islanders will take on Memphis tomorrow in the opening game of the Texas Classic. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
