Island Grass Fire Burns for Hours

CORPUS CHRISTI- A pickup truck driving on grassland triggered a fire that burned for hours and consumed hundreds of acres.

Firefighters were called out Sunday afternoon to North Padre Island, in the sand dunes between Whitecap Boulevard and the Padre Island National Seashore.

Gusty winds early in the day fanned the flames over the tall dune grasses, spreading across a vast expanse of privately owned dunes.

The fire never threatened any structures.

Firefighters believe a pickup truck, found burned at the scene, started the fire.

The fire continued burning Sunday night, but since what's left of the fire was burning towards a backbay, they will let the fire burn itself out.
