CORPUS CHRISTI -- Alert neighbors helped tip the city off to an illegal utility hook up, now the search begins for whoever rigged it, it's a crime and its also very dangerous.
The city's utility department found the utility box behind what should be a vacant home on Janssen Street. They found the boxes busted open, even jumper cables hanging from hookup.
"They busted the locks and tampered with the services so they could use the services illegally," said AJ Hernandez with the Utility Business Office.
Finding out who "they" are is the tough part.
"We do have some license plates and stuff like that, this is the beginning of it, we'll be keeping a closer eye on the property re-inspecting," Hernandez said.
That includes police, who responded to the home today.
"If they can pinpoint the person, who the person is, they'll file criminal charges on them," said Hernandez.
Neighborhood services will have to come board this up. Code enforcement tells us tampering with utilities can be very dangerous.
"You mess with electricity, you can get electrocuted, you mess with the water lines and you can contaminate the water, the city's water lines, so there's a lot of danger in it," said Hernandez.
City officials are asking for neighbors everywhere to report this type of dangerous utility connection.
