CORPUS CHRISTI - IceRays Head Coach Brent Hughes is back in town for the first time since last season ended.
So far, he's spent the summer overhauling more than half the roster, most of that on defense. Hughes had just 14 regular season games on the bench after Sylvain Cloutier was fired.
So, his focus then was just getting the team to the playoffs. However, he did see enough to know his defense needed help, so he brought in five new defensemen this season.
In addition, with the top three scorers returning, even a little help on the back end should make a big difference.
"You know, you can have the best offense team ever, but if you don't have the guys on the defensive side of the puck you wont do well. I think that's something that as me as a coach I have to instill in the defensive side of this. If you look at the players we have brought in and the players we have we have a good solid core," Hughes said.
